Chateaux d Yquem 1990

Chateaux d Yquem 1990 2/ 10/ 2020. Drunk with Jascha.

  1. Colour- burnished gold, pale copper rim. 2. Incredible nose. Barley sugar. Cream. Apricots.  3. Palate- rich, intense. Sweet but not too sweet.

The background. Our family was making a lot of money out of the steel business boom, so I asked the head of our  trust fund company if I could purchase R20 000 of wine from Michael Fridjon’s Reciprocal. The thing is that the wine arrived and some how I managed to loose the bottle of Yquem. I looked everywhere but it was no where to be found! So I bought another bottle and ended up paying R10 000 for a half bottle of d Yquem 1990!

Chateaux d Yquem is possibly the greatest Sauternes of all and can age 100 years. Anybody interested, must refer to Stephen Brooke’s “Wines of Sauternes”published by Faber and Faber.  He is still the leading authority on desert wines. 1998, 1989 and particularly 1990 was a great vintage for Sauternes. The cork was in perfect condition. Michael Fridjon writes to my cell phone “Sorry I couldn’t chat. Just read your mail. I’m delighted the d’Yquem didn’t disappoint. It’s a very plush wine, fulsome and perhaps just a little short of freshness, But a monument to the vintage as well as to the estate. ” I hope you’re well Michael. I actually found the 1998 vintage, that I also drunk with Jascha, more opulent, powerful and intense. But that was a younger vintage.
