Finally, Le Bonheur in Stellenbosch. With all the new trendy wineries on the scene in SA we don’t seem to hear much about Le Bonheur these days. But they made great Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1980’s. An edition of the 2001 John Platter wine guide comments re their Cabernet Sauvignon “Great track- record through 1980’s for this wine, and still very fine.”
My notes for their Le Bonheur Cabernet Sauvignon 1986 states “Beautiful, floral, aromatic nose. Slightly lighter on the palate than the 1987 and 1989. Makes for easy drinking. Le Bonheur Cabernet Sauvignon 1987. Best of the three tasted. Black currents, liquorish, great density and richness. 5 stars. Le Bonheur Cabernet Sauvignon 1989. Black currents and other wild berries, beginning to open. Shows promise still to develop. When ever I think of pre 1994 SA wine I think particularly of Cabernet Sauvignon, still for me one of South Africa’s best grape varieties and my mind wonders back to those old days in the mid 1990’s when I had just become serious about wine, driving to Le Bonheur and excitedly tasting and buying their Cabernet Sauvignon’s.
